Simbahang Lingkod ng Bayan (SLB), then called the Namfrel Marines, began in 1986 EDSA Revolution as a network of religious, individuals, and organizations with the aim of safeguarding ballots as a way of promoting clean and credible elections. It grew as a non-profit organization with the mission of spreading social justice through its political education campaigns, socio-political advocacy, and disaster preparedness, response and rehabilitation initiatives.
We envision a Filipino Nation that celebrates love for country, genuine democracy, and social justice.
We envision a Philippine Church that is of the poor and for the poor– a Church that witnesses fully to the faith that does justice and to the socially transformative power of the Gospel.
We envision Simbahang Lingkod ng Bayan as a network for social transformation, inspiring timely, compassionate, faith-driven responses of humanizing action towards building the Church and the Filipino nation.
Simbahang Lingkod ng Bayan is committed to:
1) Raising the social consciousness of the faithful by providing credible information and analyses on current issues, organizing fora on national concerns, and participating in efforts toward consensus building;
2) Furthering the values of catholic social teaching: of justice animated by love, of the preferential option for the poor, and of the humanization of life, by advocating for the marginalized, displaced and disadvantaged and engaging in formative programs for good citizenship, voters education, and local leadership development.
3) Creating opportunities for volunteerism, collaboration and collective action to address pressing socio-political, socio-economic and socio-cultural needs by organizing disaster response efforts, network building and fostering critical partnerships with government and the private sector.
